You don't choose your family. They are God's gift to you, as you are to them.

For goodness sake, will they hear, will white people hear what we are trying to say? Please, all we are asking you to do is to recognize that we are humans, too.

If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse, and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality.

Be nice to the whites, they need you to rediscover their humanity.

I am not interested in picking up crumbs of compassion thrown from the table of someone who considers himself my master. I want the full menu of rights.

Children are a wonderful gift. They have an extraordinary capacity to see into the heart of things and to expose sham and humbug for what they are.

Be careful what you say. Words do not only describe reality. Words create reality.

Hate has no place in the house of God.

We may be surprised at the people we find in heaven.

God has a soft spot for sinners. His standards are quite low.

A person is a person because he recognizes others as persons.

I am a leader by default, only because nature does not allow a vacuum.

When the missionaries came to Africa they had the Bible and we had the land.

They said Let us pray. We closed our eyes. When we opened them we had the Bible and they had the land.

We must be ready to learn from one another, not claiming that we alone possess all truth and that somehow we have a corner on God.

Don't raise your voice, improve your argument.

Life is more than breath and a heartbeat; meaning and purpose are the life of life.

Give a man a fish and feed him for a day.

Teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime. Teach a man to cycle and he will realize fishing is stupid and boring.

Our maturity will be judged by how well we are able to agree to disagree and yet continue to love one another, to care for one another, and cherish one another and seek the greater good of the other.

It is through weakness and vulnerability that most of us learn empathy and compassion and discover our soul.

Forgiveness is an absolute necessity for continued human existence.

Forgiveness is taking seriously the awfulness of what has happened when you are treated unfairly. Forgiveness is not pretending that things are other than the way they are.

Let us celebrate Madiba together, and not let him down.

Forgiveness and reconciliation are not just ethereal, spiritual, other-worldly activities. They have to do with the real world. They are realpolitik, because in a very real sense, without forgiveness, there is no future.

We must not allow ourselves to become like the system we oppose.

We cannot afford to use methods of which we will be ashamed when we look back, when we say, '...we shouldn't have done that.' We must remember, my friends, that we have been given a wonderful cause. The cause of freedom! And you and I must be those who will walk with heads held high. We will say, 'We used methods that can stand the harsh scrutiny of history.'

Forgiveness is abandoning your right to revenge.

There is only one way to eat an elephant, a bite at a time.

As much as the world has an instinct for evil and is a breeding ground for genocide, holocaust, slavery, racism, war, oppression, and injustice, the world has an even greateer instinct for goodness, rebirth, mercy, beauty, truth, freedom and love.

Every praying person, every person who has an encounter with God, must have a passionate concern for his or her brother and sister, his or her neighbor. To treat any of these as if he were less than the child of God is to deny the validity of one's spiritual existence.

Each person is a V.S.P. (a Very Special Person) because we are each created in the image of God.

Beware when you take on the Church of God. Others have tried and have bitten the dust.

We shall be free only together, black and white.

We shall survive only together, black and white. We can be human only together, black and white.

When I care about black liberation, it is because I care about white liberation.

Freedom is indivisible. Whites can't enjoy their separate freedoms. They spend too much time and resources defending those freedoms instead of enjoying them.

We don't want apartheid liberalized. We want it dismantled. You can't improve something that is intrinsically evil.

Because there is global insecurity, nations are engaged in a mad arms race, spending billions of dollars wastefully on instruments of destruction, when millions are starving. And yet, just a fraction of what is expended so obscenely on defense budgets would make the difference in enabling God's children to fill their stomachs, be educated, and given the chance to lead fulfilled and happy lives.

My father always used to say, "Don't raise your voice. Improve your argument."

Frequently people think compassion and love are merely sentimental.

No! They are very demanding. If you are going to be compassionate, be prepared for action.

When people were hungry, Jesus didn't say, "Now is that political or social?" He said, "I feed you." Because the good news to a hungry person is bread.

If everyone who wants to see an end to poverty, hunger and suffering speaks out, then the noise will be deafening.

Dream! Dream! And then go for it!

We struggled against apartheid because we were being blamed and made to suffer for something we could do nothing about. It is the same with homosexuality. The orientation is a given, not a matter of choice. It would be crazy for someone to choose to be gay, given the homophobia that is present.

Love is much more demanding than law.

Goodness is stronger than evil. Love is stronger than hate. Light is stronger than darkness. Life is stronger than death. Victory is ours through Him who loved us.

All of our humanity is dependent upon recognizing the humanity in others

It is by standing up for the rights of girls and women that we truly measure up as men.

We must not allow ourselves to become like the system we oppose.

We must not allow ourselves to become like the system we oppose.

We cannot afford to use methods of which we will be ashamed when we look back, when we say, '...we shouldn't have done that.'

There is no situation that is not transformable.

There is no person who is hopeless. There is no set of circumstances that cannot be turned about by ordinary human beings and their natural capacity for love of the deepest sort.

It means a great deal to those who are oppressed to know that they are not alone. And never let anyone tell you that what you are doing is insignificant.

If the West wants to have peace, then they have to accept Islamic rule.

Stability and peace in our land will not come from the barrel of a gun, because peace without justice is an impossibility.

There will be no future without forgiveness.

Any process of peace is bound to collapse if this is missing. There is no way peace and stability can come through the gun of vengeance.

To take a life when a life has been lost is revenge, not justice.

The abolition of the death penalty is making us a civilized society.

It shows we actually do mean business when we say we have reverence for life.
