Democracy is constructed like an edifice, freedom by freedom, right by right, until it reaches its snapping point.
There is hardly an American male of my generation who has not at one time or another tried to master the victory cry of the great ape as it issued from the androgynous chest of Johnny Weissmuller, to the accompaniment of thousands of arms and legs snapping during attempts to swing from tree to tree in the backyards of the Republic.
I was never the girl who walked down the centre of the hallway snapping people out of her way.
That's another hallmark of truth, is that it snaps things together.
People write to me all the time and say it's as if things were coming together in my mind. It's like the Platonic idea that all learning was remembering. You have a nature, and when you feel that nature articulated, it's it's like the act of snapping the puzzle pieces together.
